M.I.A. 'wasn't thinking' during Super Bowl bird flip

mia-youtube.jpgRapper M.I.A. caused quite the hubbub on Sunday (Feb. 5) when she flipped the bird during the Super Bowl halftime show. And now it appears she's recognized the error of giving the finger to an estimated 111 million American viewers.

"She wasn't thinking," a member of M.I.A.'s team who requested anonymity tells The Daily Mail. "It wasn't any kind of statement.

The source adds that M.I.A. "was caught in the moment, and she's incredibly sorry."

It was during a performance of Madonna's new song "Give Me All Your Luvin'" that the Sri Lankan rapper decided to extend her middle finger.

Her behavior drew an immediate apology from both the NFL and NBC, the network that broadcast the game.

"There was a failure in NBC's delay system. The obscene gesture in the performance was completely inappropriate, very disappointing, and we apologize to our fans," the NFL says in a statement.

NBC heaped the blame on the NFL saying, "The NFL hired the talent and produced the halftime show. Our system was late to obscure the inappropriate gesture and we apologize to our viewers."

Regardless of who is to blame, it appears that M.I.A. will get stuck with any fines from the FCC as both the league and the network have taken measures to protect themselves.

While M.I.A.'s publicists at Interscope have been M.I.A., the source says the rapper was struck with "a case of adrenaline and nerves."

So Zappers, do you believe this story?
