Mikey Welsh, ex Weezer bassist, passes away at the age of 40

mikey-welsh-weezer-facebook.jpgMikey Welsh, a former bassist for the alternative rock band Weezer, passed away suddenly at the age of 40 Saturday afternoon (Oct. 8) in Chicago. His family posted to his Twitter and Facebook accounts, "We are deeply saddened to announce that Mikey Welsh passed away unexpectedly today. He will forever be remembered as an amazing father, artist, and friend. May he rest in peace."

A cause of death has yet to be released.

Welsh's former bandmates took to Twitter to express their condolences. The band's official Twitter writes, "We are shocked and deeply saddened to hear the awful news, our friend and fellow Weezer rocker @mikeywelsh71 has passed away. We love you Mikey."

Weezer drummer Patrick Wilson says, "Rest in peace Mikey Welsh, you deserve it." and current bassist Scott Shriner writes, "My heart goes out to his family and friends. Such a talent... he made a special mark on the world with his art."

Welsh joined Weezer in 1998 when original bassist Matt Sharp left the group and was with them until 2001, when Welsh left the band for what was eventually revealed to be a nervous breakdown and a suicide attempt. But he got help and retired from music in 2002, becoming a full-time artist. He had been living in Vermont with his wife and two sons, but had been on vacation in Chicago at the time of his death.

In an eerie coincidence, Welsh tweeted on Sept. 26, "dreamt i died in chicago next weekend (heart attack in my sleep). need to write my will today."

Our condolences go out to his family and friends.
