Mindy Kaling's Elle cover criticized for hiding her body, skin tone

Update: Mindy Kaling continues to tweet about her Elle cover and it seems she's happy with it. "I love my @ELLEmagazine cover. It made me feel glamorous & cool," she writes. "And if anyone wants to see more of my body, go on thirteen dates with me."

If there's one thing the Internet won't stand for, it's doing wrong by the funny people. Mindy Kaling is featured on one of four covers for Elle magazine's annual Women in TV issue, but many are upset with how it turned out.

Though Elle traditionally features women from the waist up on the cover, "The Mindy Project" creator and star's photo is cropped to a headshot, omitting her admitted size 8 frame. What's more, the cover is in black and white, hiding her true skin tone.

While it could be considered an artistic choice for the issue, the problem is there are three other covers. Zooey Deschanel ( "New Girl"), Amy Poehler ( "Parks and Recreation") and Allison Williams ( "Girls") are all photographed in color, with full-length shots.

It's not the first time Elle has come under fire for changing the layout of their cover for celebrities who don't fit the Hollywood idea of fit. In 2010, "Precious" star Gabourey Sidibe was shown in a similarly cropped photo, while many complained that her skin was lightened.

Elle is defending the cover of Kaling. In a statement to E! News, the magazine says, "Mindy looks sexy, beautiful and chic. We think it is a striking and sophisticated cover and are thrilled to celebrate her in our Women in TV Issue." Elle doesn't address who made the decision about the shot. This could be similar to the incident with Melissa McCarthy. The world was in an uproar over a coat she wore on an Elle cover, because McCarthy revealed she chose it.

For her part, Kaling is playing the entire thing off like a joke. "Wishing for more skin on my @ELLEmagazine cover? Chris Messina & I are naked on a brand new #themindyproject tonight, ya pervs! 930/830 FOX," she writes on Twitter. "(It's actually, coincidentally, true. Thank heavens my writers constantly script nudity. So: super funny, totally nude Chris/Mindy tonight!)"

To compare, take a look at the other covers below and decide for yourself: Did Elle slight Kaling with its cover decision?
