'Modern Family' Season 5 premiere: So the answer is yes, but what's the question?

jesse-tyler-ferguson-eric-stonestreet-modern-family-season-5-premiere-abc.jpgEver since June's historic Supreme Court ruling legalizing gay marriage in the state of California, the cast and crew of "Modern Family" had been playing coy over whether or not Mitch ( Jesse Tyler Ferguson) and Cam ( Eric Stonestreet) would finally tie the knot. After a promo crafted specifically to suggest an impending proposal, the Season 5 premiere (which aired Wednesday, Sept. 25) ended with an engagement. But how did it happen?

In true "Modern Family" fashion, the road to Mitch and Cam's engagement didn't happen at all as planned. On the day of the legalization, swept up in the momentous occasion, both guys wanted to craft their own proposal -- without realizing that the other was doing just the same. Enlisting the entire family to help with their plans, neither made it to the big moment because of a flat tire.

But, while putting on the spare, Mitch and Cam lucked into their true romantic moment. As they both got down on one knee to help one another, there in the moonlight, they realized they didn't need much more. And just like that, simultaneously, they told one another, "Yes."

It looks like we've got a wedding to plan in Season 5.

Elsewhere, Claire ( Julie Bowen) and Phil ( Ty Burrell) were trying to arrange the kids' summer schedules so as to give them just one kid-free week, while Gloria ( Sofia Vergara) and Jay ( Ed O'Neill) were prepping to send Manny ( Rico Rodriguez) off to Colombia. But the half-hour belonged to Mitch and Cam. Yes, indeed.

Quotables:

- "I know how that works. I rented the wrong movie once. Have you seen 'Glengarry Glen and Ross'?" - Gloria tells Cam about gay sex.

- Malaria and her daughter Rubella will pick Manny up at the airport in Colombia, and they may have diphtheria.

- "What if he never comes back?" - Lily, to Jay and Gloria as Manny leaves.
"Oh honey, no one ever leaves home and never comes back." - Jay
"I did." - Lily

- "They keep their tools in a pillowcase, but they have an occasion closet." - Jay, as he, Gloria and Lily ready Mitch and Cam's apartment for the proposal.
