Natalie Wood's death now 'undetermined' after coroner changes finding

The "Rebel Without a Cause" and "West Side Story" star's drowning death in 1981 had been ruled an accident. But the Los Angeles County coroner filed paperwork to change the death certificate to "undetermined" in late June, TMZ reports. Wood's family was notified of the change on Friday (July 6).

The L.A. County sheriff re-opened an investigation into Wood's death late last year, but in January the department's chief of detectives said investigators hadn't uncovered anything to make them consider changing the status.

The coroner's office, however, made the change because it believes some bruises on Wood's body are inconsistent with an accidental death.

The change doesn't mean the coroner necessarily suspects foul play -- only that it can't say with certainty how Wood died. A member of Wood's family tells TMZ that detectives told them Wood's death was the result of drowning, but the investigation hasn't been able to determine how she ended up in the water off Catalina Island on Nov. 29, 1981.
