NBC picks up 'Camp' drama: 'Dazed and Confused' meets 'Meatballs' this summer

nbc-camp-meatballs.jpgSleep-away camp has been the setting for plenty of our favorite comedies -- from TV's "Salute Your Shorts" to movies like "Heavyweights" and "Meatballs." Now, NBC is tapping the well for a new summer drama, "Camp," which has been picked up for a 13-episode series to debut in summer 2013.

Tonally similar to the iconic film "Dazed and Confused," "Camp" takes place at the lakeside Little Hawk Family Camp -- yes, a sleepaway camp that parents bring their kids to. According to NBC's press release, the parents booze it up while teenagers "make gleeful mischief and fall in and out of love."

It's an hourlong drama, executive produced by Liz Heldens (NBC's upcoming "Deception," "Friday Night Lights") and Peter Elkoff ("Deception," "Gossip Girl"). Casting hasn't yet been announced, but production will begin in Australia in March.

NBC President of Entertainment Jennifer Salke says in a statement, "In our desire to make summer an exciting place at NBC along with our signature unscripted shows like 'America's Got Talent,' 'The Voice' and 'American Ninja Warrior,' we developed a scripted dramedy we love with BermanBraun that has rich and dysfunctional characters in that great setting where millions of families and young people go each summer: camp."
