New 'Gangster Squad' trailer doesn't skimp on the bullets

gangster-squad.jpgA new trailer for "Gangster Squad" excises a controversial scene in which gangsters shoot up a movie theater, but there's still more than enough gunplay to go around.

The movie about the LAPD's battle with mobster Mickey Cohen ( Sean Penn) had been scheduled for release in September. That was before the mass shooting at an Aurora, Colo., multiplex during a showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" in July. (The trailer had been attached to some prints of "The Dark Knight Rises," but not in Aurora.)

Warner Bros. pulled the original trailer and cut the theater shooting scene from the film, which forced reshoots of the film's climax. That in turn delayed the release date, which is now set for Jan. 11.

Even without the theater scene, the new trailer has plenty of violence. Bullets fly everywhere, people get punched and three unfortunate saps who cross Cohen are burned alive in an elevator. There's also a little more exposition about the LAPD's gang squad, led by Josh Brolin and Ryan Gosling, and a little more of the romance between Gosling's and Emma Stone's characters.
