Ignoring for a moment the months-long onslaught of casting news and a shot of a newly svelte Peter Jackson in the Shire, we haven't seen that much from "The Hobbit."

The two-part film, based on J. R. R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" prequel, doesn't see its first release until Dec. 14, 2012. But in the current issue of EW, there are three key shots from the first days of the epic 254-day shoot.

In addition to the above image of star Martin Freeman in Bilbo Baggins get-up for the first time, there's a picture of Ian McKellen back in his Gandalf garb and one of Jackson and Freeman working together.

And the director explains to EW why Freeman might be the most well-cast hobbit to date. ''He fits the ears, and he's got some very nice feet,'' Jackson says of his Bilbo. ''I think he's got the biggest hobbit feet we've had so far. They're a little bit hard to walk in, but he's managed to figure out the perfect hobbit gait.''
