New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys comeback makes us miss *NSYNC

nsync-getty.jpgThe New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys - henceforth referred to as NKOTBSB - blew us away with their American Music Awards performance on Sunday (Nov. 21). Who knew those old guys can still dance? A.J. McLean's facial hair is as intricate as ever, Nick Carter and Joey McIntyre are still The Cute Ones, and Donnie Wahlberg is still in Mark's shadow. (His brother was profiled on "60 Minutes" the same night.)

Look, we're not ashamed to admit that we totally had an NKOTB lunchbox and somewhere in our closet we may still have a VHS recording of BSB's "Making the Video" for "I Want it That Way."

But despite our inner teenybopper waking up, we couldn't help but watch the boy-band-o-rama and feel like something was missing... and we're not talking about 98 Degrees.

We miss *NSYNC! And we're not the only ones. The morning after the AMAs, NKOTB and BSB were missing from the Twitter trending topics, but *NSYNC was sitting pretty at No. 7. *NSYNC may have started as BSB's annoying tag-along carbon copy, but their 2000 album "No Strings Attached" put them light years ahead of their labelmates, and the subsequent "Celebrity" carved out a permanent place for them in pop canon.

With Justin Timberlake launched into superstardom, we're thinking that an *NSYNC reunion performance is highly unlikely. (But hey, we'd be delighted by a paparazzi picture of all five guys at lunch together. We're not asking much.) Still, we can't help but think that to make a comeback, those guys wouldn't need an extra boyband on stage cheering them on and mashing their songs together.
