Nick Lachey spills details on his new solo album & wife Vanessa Minnillo describing herself as a 'married old bag'
Lachey: Well, I think it's good to have a little energy. We went for the uptempo 98 Degrees song, which is "Una Noche," so that's the way it won out.
You introduce the acts on "The Sing-Off," but do you ever wish you could jump in and critique them?
No! I'm so glad I'm not a judge on this show because I am not good at it. I can't be objective. I'm just not a good judge. I definitely have the right role for me. As a musician, we all hear things and say "Ooh, that was a little off," but we've all been there too. So we all understand sometimes those things happen and you learn from them and you get better. All these groups in this competition have done that.
Were you rooting for any group in particular?
I am an objective host. I don't root for any group in particular. Any three of these groups could've won tonight and I would've been incredibly proud and felt they were incredibly deserving.
How was it being back in the saddle?
It was not exactly the same as performing with the guys, so I can't really speak to how it would be to do that whole thing, but it was great to perform. I love performing. It's been a while since I had a chance to be onstage and do that. Certainly, being fans of theirs all season long, it was really cool to be able to do that performance with them.
Musically, what's next for you?
I'm in the studio now doing a new record. It's called "The Soundtrack of My Life." It's all songs from movies that I've grown up on, that mean something to me. So it's kind of got a little back story to it. So yeah, I'm in the studio working on that right now -- hopefully that'll be out early next summer. Other than that, just finishing up "The Sing Off" here and getting ready to drink some egg nog.
What's your favorite song you've recorded so far?
Wow. Well, a song that's really special to me is one that we [Lachey and wife Vanessa Minnillo] actually had sung for us at our engagement party, which is "Falling Slowly," the song from the movie "Once." I haven't finished the album, but to this point that's probably the one that jumps out at me as being my favorite.
Before you go, I'd like to get your opinion on something. Last week at the AMAs, Vanessa said on the red carpet that she was a "married old bag." Can you please share your thoughts on the matter?
[Laughs] I don't know if she's a bag!
That's what she said! I'm quoting.
She's a young married vixen, how's that? Not an old married bag. Young married vixen.
