Also on hand, 800 attendees including Barbara Walters, Marha Stewart, Larry David, Rosie O'Donnell, Steven Spielberg, Bette Midler, Regis Philbin, Meryl Streep, Carl Bernstein (Ephron's ex), designer Diane von Furstenberg, Senator Al Franken, Jon Hamm, Steve Martin, Charlie Rose and director Mike Nichols.

The ceremony opened with a talk from comedian and longtime Ephron friend Martin Short who shared some of his favorite Ephron lines ("Hazelnuts are what's wrong with Europe."), but there were 10 other speakers including Streep and Nora's sister, Delia Ephron.

Ephron directed that the service be "finished in under 47 minutes" and her presence was felt everywhere -- even in the programs, which contained various recipes, reports the New York Times. Ephron was a big foodie and directed the 2009 film "Julie & Julia" which starred Streep as legendary chef Julia Child.

"Was there anyone in the world with more opinions?" asked Delia Ephron during her turn at the podium. "The planet is practically opinionless now."
