Old Spice's 'Smell like a man, Man': The Super Bowl ad that should've been
According to the ads that aired during the 2010 Super Bowl, women are the bane of men's existence. Because they have to put up with such things as relationship and family responsibilities and other people's (namely women's) feelings, men deserve to drive Dodge, hang with their bros and ogle Go Daddy girls.
Here's the commercial we wish had been shown. Old Spice's The Man Your Man Could Smell Like:
Despite the fact that any mention of Old Spice makes us embarrassed for the little girl who gave it as a gift to our dad way too often as a child -- How often is too often? Once, probably -- this ad makes us laugh with delight each and every time it airs, because it's goofy and self-aware.
It's like seeing Liz Lemon's imaginary boyfriend Astronaut Mike Dexter come to life right before your very eyes.
And it manages to use and make fun of female fantasy stereotypes without actually making fun of women. What a novel concept.
Although it should be noted if you do what the commercial asks -- "Look at your man. Now look at me. Now look at your man." -- your actual man will not be amused.
We didn't think the Bruce Campbell Old Spice commercials could be topped.
We were wrong.
To put it in the company's own words: "We're not saying this body wash will make your man smell like a romantic millionaire jet fighter pilot, but we are insinuating it."
