One Direction getting a concert movie directed by Morgan Spurlock -- wait, what?

Considering the success Justin Bieber and Katy Perry had with their concert documentaries released over the past couple years, it seems like it only was matter of time before British boy band One Direction got the same treatment. The director chosen to helm the project, however, is a bit surprising.

Fans know Morgan Spurlock best for documentaries like "Super Size Me" and "Comic Con Episode IV: A Fan's Hope," and can thank him for McDonald's getting rid of the Super Size option. But having him as the director of a movie about One Direction? Well, stranger things have happened.

Simon Cowell will produce the new movie, and it's slated for an August 30, 2013 release. Spurlock will be allowed access to the private moments of One Direction members Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson, as well (of course) to their upcoming world tour, which launches in February.

"I'm delighted we're making this film and Morgan is the perfect person to give that access-all-areas, behind-the-scenes look into what it's like to be One Direction today," Cowell says in a statement. "What the band have achieved is incredible, they and their fans have made history around the world -- this is for them."

Spurlock adds, "This is an incredible opportunity and an amazing moment in time for the band. To capture this journey and share it with audiences around the world will be an epic undertaking that I am proud to be a part of."

Who knows what Spurlock will uncover with his documentary. Now, should we start making bets on whether or not this flick will be filmed in 3D?
