Patricia Carroll: CNN camerawoman says RNC 'animal' incident could have happened anywhere
"There are not that many black women there," Patricia Carroll, 34, tells the Maynard Institute. "You come to places like this, you can count the black people on your hand. They see us doing things they don't think I should do."
Carroll was not operating her camera at the time the two Republican convention attendees (who according to the head of one of the delegations must have been alternates, not delegates) began to throw nuts and taunt her with, "This is how we feed animals." But she's quick to point out that it could just as easily have happened to her next week at the DNC or any day of the week on a street corner.
"Racism is a global issue," Carroll, who is from Alabama, says. "This should be a wake-up call to black people ... People were living in euphoria for a while. People think we're gone further than we have."
