Peter Parker's death? 'Amazing Spider-Man' issue 700 ends with surprise twist

It's time to say goodbye to Spider-Man -- at least, for now. Consider this your obligatory spoiler alert

Comic book fans likely didn't see Peter Parker's death coming at the end of "The Amazing Spider-Man #700," but considering the fact the issue marks the end of the long-running comics series, it shouldn't have come as that much of a shock. Peter loses in a battle with his longtime enemy, Doctor Octopus, but that surprisingly isn't the biggest twist in the issue.

In the finale of the final "Amazing Spider-Man" issue, Doc Ock swaps minds with Peter, meaning that Peter is trapped in the old, withered body of his archenemy while the good Doctor has been reborn as the new Spider-Man. With "Superior Spider-Man #1" due out Jan. 9, 2013, expect his Spider-Man story to continue there.

"This is Moriarty in the head of Sherlock. This is Prince John inside of Robin Hood. This is the greatest villain inside the body of the greatest hero and trying to do good," Marvel writer Dan Slott explains to USA Today of the twist ending. "This is a guy who was a couple steps way from a bucket list, and now he's got a whole new lease on life. That's really going to change him."

"Superior" editor Stephen Wacker adds of the new series, "We want to do Spider-Man by way of Batman -- a little creepier and darker."
