'Ravenswood' premiere: Is Miranda a ghost now?
Caleb and Miranda
Following the events of the PLL Halloween episode, Caleb stays in Ravenswood to help Miranda look into their mysterious connection to the town -- starting with two gravestones that have their names and faces on them. Cree-py.
Miranda is also there to reach out to her long-lost uncle whom she just found out about. His name is Raymond Collins and he's the town funeral director ... who also happens to live with Mrs. Grunwald. Yes, the glow-in-the-dark-eyed sorority house mother who knows way more about Alison DiLaurentis than she's telling.
Raymond isn't exactly thrilled for his niece to have just dropped into town, but he gives Caleb and Miranda a place to stay, complete with ghosts that may or may not try to drown you in the bathtub. (Nobody thinks that was Raymond, right?)
Olivia and Luke
Meanwhile, the Matheson twins have their problems in the form of a dead dad that everyone thinks was killed by their mother, even going so far as to spray paint "black widow" on his shared gravestone with her. The town turning against them escalates to the point where Olivia gets red paint thrown in her "Carrie"-style during the Homecoming parade.
But wait! It turns out that Luke actually kind of thinks the townspeople are right. Their mom killed their dad and he lied to the police for her. Ruh roh.
Remy, the Gazette and the Curse
Remy is the inquisitive soul who brings the aforementioned pairs together. She and Caleb bond over the creepy history of the town, with Remy even finding an obituary for the old-timey Caleb Rivers, who is present-day Caleb's spit and image.
Our intrepid reporter is also dating Luke and as Luke and Olivia walk home from the parade together, Remy picks them up. With all five teens in her car, they drive over a bridge where Miranda sees the spectre that's been haunting her since she arrived in town, jerks the wheel of the car and they crash off the bridge into the water below.
Who will survive? We have a theory about that, but it involves speculating about pictures that ABC Family has released for upcoming episodes, so don't keep reading if you don't want to be know. These aren't for sure spoilers -- we are only speculating. You've been warned.
We think Miranda dies in the crash and is now a ghost on the show. Here's why.
ABC Family has released pictures and episode descriptions for episodes 102 and 103. The description for episode two, titled "Death and the Maiden" reads:
Caleb struggles in the aftermath of what happened at the Ravenswood Homecoming Parade... And Miranda can't quite grasp her new reality.
The pictures are below. The kids are obviously at the hospital after getting out of the river and the police are there (in another picture not shown here).
The description for episode three, titled "Believe," reads:
In order to prove to Luke that something otherworldly is happening, the gang decides to hold a séance ... Meanwhile, everyone gathers for a somber event, and Collins and Miranda both offer Caleb a reason to stay in Ravenswood.
Now, none of that inherently says "ghost." But check out the pictures below of the funeral. Everybody's there -- Remy, Luke, Olivia, Caleb, Miranda's uncle, etc. But Miranda is there in one picture, conspicuously wearing the clothes from the premiere, and she's gone in the next picture. She is also notably absent from all the episode 2 and 3 pictures except the one from the funeral that is below.
To us, this spells G-H-O-S-T.
Obviously, since "Ravenswood" is supposed to be a ghost story, it's really not a big deal if Miranda is dead and haunting the town. We actually find that fairly awesome, since it's pretty ballsy to kill off one of your main characters in the first episode.
We have to wonder -- can the others see or hear her? Is that something Miranda has to figure out how to do in the first couple episodes after the premiere? We can't wiat to find out.
Thoughts & Tidbits
- Who do you think threw paint on Olivia during the parade? It couldn't have been Luke right? He was wearing different clothes when Olivia found him on the street shortly after.
- We're very intrigued about this "connection to a soldier" thing. Why is the soldier coming home from an ambush that killed everyone else the instigation for these teens dying? Do you think it all dates back to the flood of 1896? Was that what started the curse? We can't wait to find out.
- In case you missed it, the other teens killed in the 1918 boating accident with old Miranda and old Caleb were Rachael Willis, Jeremiah Jones and Caroline Schlegel.
- Best Line: Caleb, in re: Mrs. Grunwald -- "Every time she looks at me, I feel like someone's taking a potato peeler to my skin."
- Did you catch the PLL-Alison shout-out? Two little blonde twins in red coats at the Homecoming parade?
