'Real Steel' knocks out 'Footloose' for box office win

real-steel-robots.jpgDespite its positive message and fancy footwoork, the Julianne Hough-fronted "Footloose" remake wasn't able to keep up with Hugh Jackman's "Real Steel" at the box office.

The boxing robot flick danced past the competition to win the weekend box office with an estimated $16.3 million in ticket sales in its second week, reports The Wrap. "Footloose," it should be noted, didn't fare too poorly -- taking in $16.1 million.

The weekend's other biggish flick, "The Thing," grabbed only $8.7 million, leaving the Halloween door open for next Friday's (Oct. 21) release of "Paranormal Activity 3." Meanwhile, "A Big Year" turned out to be a big disappointment for stars Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson -- the comedy with a heart took in just $3.3 million nationwide.

The Wrap also reports that the box office was down 31 percent compared with the same weekend last year, when "Jackass 3D" opened to $50 million.
