rem-gi.jpgAfter three decades of making music together, R.E.M. announced on Wednesday (Sept. 21) that the band had called it quits.

"To our Fans and Friends," reads a statement posted to the band's official website, "As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band. We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening."

And, according to bassist Mike Mills, there are no hard feelings.

"We feel kind of like pioneers in this," writes Mills. "There's no disharmony here, no falling-outs, no lawyers squaring-off. We've made this decision together, amicably and with each other's best interests at heart. The time just feels right."

The band formed in Athens, Ga., in 1980 and went on to put out 15 studio albums. the latest, "Collapse Into Now," was released in March. The band is also putting out a greatest hits collection later this year.
