'Robot Chicken' writer will reboot 'Short Circuit'

Johnny5_shortcircuit_290 Who's Johnny? El DeBarge's eternal question will be posed to a new generation of moviegoers.

Johnny 5 will be rebooted by Dimension Films and "Robot Chicken" writer Dan Milano, according to Variety. Based on "Chicken," expect the script to be full of pop-culture references and twisted humor.

No other details were available, other than that the reboot will take advantage of recent leaps in robotics technology.

"We're bringing Number 5 into the 21st Century and taking advantage of the improvements in robotics that are so massive that robots are now performing heart surgeries in hospitals," producer David Foster said in a statement.

The 1986 original followed military robot SAINT 5, who develops a personality after a lightning strike and goes on the run as Johnny 5. A 1988 sequel moved the action to New York City.
