Just when you don't want to know someone any better, you end up quarantined together.
Such is the luck of Officer Andy McNally ( Missy Peregrym), who found herself forcibly isolated with her ex-love Sam Swarek's ( Ben Bass) current girlfriend -- Officer Marlo Cruz ( Rachael Ancheril) -- in Thursday's (July 18) ABC "Rookie Blue" episode "Poison Pill."
Uncomfortably partnered for the day and following a lead on a drug dealer, the women suddenly found themselves covered in heroin tainted with anthrax ... and stuck in the art gallery where they had collared the dealer, after he up-ended a table that sent the powder flying all over the two cops. 'Just another day at the office," as Swarek wryly summed it up.
In the course of being treated with antibiotics, McNally and alleged "ice queen" Cruz had plenty of time to hash things out. The initially confrontational tone changed, though, once Cruz confessed she was bipolar and "managing it" with medicine. Fearing she'd be suspended, demoted or fired, she asked Andy to keep her secret.
Bipolar disorder factored into the story in another way, with Dov ( Gregory Smith) suspecting Chloe ( Priscilla Faia) might have the condition -- which she angrily denied when he eventually confronted her about it -- after he spotted a pill box that actually was Cruz's.
Gail ( Charlotte Sullivan) used the drug case to volunteer for work with Detective Jacob Blackstone (recurring guest star Louis Ferreira, also of ABC's "Motive"), really hoping to learn the nature of her cop boyfriend Nick's ( Peter Mooney) dealings with Andy during their recent undercover mission. Realizing what she was after, Blackstone steered her back on a work path by advising her to "suck it up and get your head in the game."
The return-to-the-precinct hug that Gail later saw Nick give Andy did little to allay her worries, prompting her to seek out and pick up Blackstone at The Black Penny. Meanwhile, Andy shared with Traci ( Enuka Okuma) her new conclusion that Cruz is "not that bad. I wish she was."
And in the closing scene, Chris ( Travis Milne) took a presumably final look around 15 Division, his transfer to another city and police department having been finalized.
Things keep changing, indeed, for the officers of "Rookie Blue." And almost midway through Season 4, don't expect that to stop ... particularly since we now know there also will be a Season 5.
