ABC on Monday (Oct. 29) picked up a full second season of the drama, which has been a steady if not spectacular performer for the network on Thursday nights. Its second-season order had initially been for 13 episodes -- a fairly common practice for shows that have short runs in their first seasons ("Scandal" aired only seven episodes last spring).

Through its first four airings this fall, "Scandal" is averaging 7.65 million viewers and a 2.4 rating among adults 18-49 (including DVR use for the first two episodes). Those numbers are pretty close to its average for last season (8.7 million viewers, 2.6 in 18-49).

"Scandal" is currently unraveling the story behind why Olivia ( Kerry Washington) gave Quinn ( Katie Lowes) a new identity -- an arc that, presumably, was designed for the initial 13-episode order. It's unclear whether creator Shonda Rhimes and her writers will extend that story or start a new one with episode 14.

ABC has yet to decide whether to pick up its three new dramas: "666 Park Avenue," "Last Resort" and "Nashville." Up or down calls should be coming in the next couple of weeks.
