'Sherlock' Season 3 won't film until 2013

sherlock.jpgWhile U.S. fans are still waiting for the second season of the BBC's "Sherlock" to air on PBS in May, news from across the pond is pegging the promised third season could be more than a year away.

"Sherlock" executive producer Beryl Vertue tells the BBC's Virtue Magazine that the third season of the Benedict Cumberbatch/ Martin Freeman update of the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle tales won't even go into production until 2013.

Doing a little basic math that means even British fans probably wouldn't see new episodes until at least summer 2013 and the wait would be even longer in the U.S. There is precedent for the audience's patience, though.

The first season aired in the U.K. in July 2010 and didn't return until January 2012 -- a full 18 months later. Yet fans came back with a vengeance and American-based "Sherlock" aficionados are already eagerly awaiting the kickoff of Season 2 here on Sunday, May 6 on PBS.

There is also the matter of "Elementary," the CBS  pilot that casts Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu as Holmes and Watson. If picked up, the show would likely debut in fall 2012.
