Can you really do Broadway without Liza Minnelli? Apparently, the answer is no. NBC's musical drama "Smash" -- which returns in February for a second season -- has booked Minnelli to play herself in an upcoming episode.

While there aren't too many details about the multi-talented legend's appearance on the show, NBC has stated that Minnelli will duet with "Smash" star Christian Borle on an original song written by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. She will appear in an episode titled "The Surprise Party."

In a statement about the casting, NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt praises his show's future guest star:

"Liza Minnelli is the essence of a multi-talented, singular show business sensation, particularly for her extraordinary contributions to Broadway. So what could be more fitting than to have her legendary talent on a show that celebrates a world Liza has dazzled for decades?"

Minnelli is indeed the sensation Greenblatt describes. She is, after all, the rare entertainer who has achieved the EGOT -- winning Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony awards.

"Smash" returns for its second season on Tuesday, Feb. 5.
