Sofia Coppola's 'The Bling Ring' sets Cannes premiere, but not in competition

the-bling-ring-emma-watson-cannes.jpg Sofia Coppola's "The Bling Ring" has snagged a splashy Cannes Film Festival premiere, but it won't be playing in the fest's official competition.

"Bling" will open the sidebar section Un Certain Regard, a prestigious category but not as celebrated as the Competition lineup -- which is the section of the Official Selection eligible for the bulk of the festival's awards.

"Bling" stars Emma Watson, Leslie Mann, Taissa Farmiga, Katie Chang, Israel Broussard, Gavin Rossdale and Paris Hilton and is inspired by the true story of a group of teenagers who broke into the Los Angeles area homes of various celebrities -- including Orlando Bloom, Rachel Bilson and Hilton herself -- and made off with over $3 million worth of cash and property.

Coppola has been in Cannes' Official Competition once before with 2006's "Marie Antoinette," which was famously booed at its premiere screening (not all that unusual for Cannes) and did not earn any prizes from that year's festival jury.

Her most recent film, "Somewhere," earned the top prize when it premiered at the 2010 Venice Film Festival -- although that too was controversial because Coppola's former boyfriend Quentin Tarantino was the head of that year's Venice jury.

This year's Cannes Film Festival runs May 15-26. "The Bling Ring" is scheduled to open in the U.S. on June 14, but you can watch the teaser trailer right now.
