'Southland' Season 5 is most likely happening

Variety reports that TNT and Warner Bros. TV, which produces the series, are close to finishing negotiations for a fifth season of the show (and fourth on cable, after a brief run on NBC in 2009). They're still discussing the length of a fifth season, however. TNT wants to make 10 episodes -- as it's done for the past two seasons -- while the studio and "Southland's" producers are hoping to extend the new season to 13 hours.

"Southland," which stars Ben McKenzie, Michael Cudlitz, Regina King and Shawn Hatosy, has become a steady performer for TNT. The series averaged 2.9 million viewers in Season 4, about even with the previous season, but the audience got a little younger: Ratings among adults 18-49 and adults 25-54 both improved a little.

A deal between TNT and Warner Bros. TV (which are both part of Time Warner Inc.) is expected by the end of the week.
