"Star Wars" star Peter Mayhew, who played Chewbacca in the first three movies, along with "Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith," is recovering from double-knee replacement surgery in a Texas hospital. Mayhew underwent the surgery Monday (September 9).

His wife, Angie Mayhew, says the surgery will hopefully allow Peter to walk again, after being largely confined to a wheelchair for the past two years, the Associated Press reports. Doctors also administered a tendon-stretching procedure, intended to help stabilize Mayhew's legs.

Peter's recovery is being documented via his Twitter account, which is sharing photos of him getting out of bed for the first time, and even getting to drink his beloved Dr. Pepper. Additionally, his gigantism and medical problems are being examined in the upcoming documentary, "Standing in the Stars: The Peter Mayhew Story."
