'Supernatural's' Misha Collins on Season 7: Will Castiel find redemption?

spn-castiel-god-pointy.jpgWhen "Supernatural" boss Sera Gamble announced in May that Misha Collins' role would be reduced to guest star status in Season 7, fans were shocked -- especially because the season finale showed us a whole new side of his character when Castiel absorbed enough power to become the new God.

AOL was the first to speak with Collins, who was a series regular in Season 5 and Season 6, about the implications of his new place in the credits.

"I am not going to be a series regular on 'Supernatural' next year," he said. "I don't really know what my role on the show is going to be."

Collins confirms that we will see Castiel in the first and second episode of the season. "I don't know beyond that what the season holds for me," he says. The third episode, currently shooting in Vancouver, is a Sam-centric episode directed by Jensen Ackles.

The guest star status implies that Collins' role is more flexible, but it doesn't necessarily mean that it won't extend past those two episodes. Collins was a guest star in Season 4 and was featured in 13 out of 22 episodes -- the same number he appeared in in Season 6 as a series regular. Jim Beaver has never been upgraded to series regular status for various reasons, but he's appeared in about a third of all "Supernatural" episodes thus far.

Collins also mentions that he hopes to see the character get "some redemption" this season.

We'd be surprised if Castiel doesn't see redemption. After all, his character was led astray by a demon and, despite noble intentions, turned down a dark path -- this isn't something we've never seen before on the show. Sam ( Jared Padalecki) had a similar arc in Season 4, and though it took a while, it would appear that he's been forgiven.

What are you hoping to see for Castiel this season, "Supernatural" fans? Will he be forgiven for absorbing the souls of Purgatory and becoming a super-bossy new God? Drop us a line in the comments below and tell us your thoughts on our favorite "fallen angel."
