'The Crazy Ones' preview: Robin Williams and Sarah Michelle Gellar team up in new CBS comedy
Working in advertising is tough. Working with your dad? Also tough. Working with your dad when your dad is Robin Williams? Tougher still. Welcome to "The Crazy Ones."
The new fall CBS comedy, from executive producer David E. Kelly, boasts two of the 2013-14 season's most impressive casting achievements in the form of Williams, returning to series TV for the first time since "Mork and Mindy," and Sarah Michelle Gellar, giving comedy a try after her first attempt at a post-"Buffy" comeback, The CW's "Ringer," proved a flop.
"The Crazy Ones," one of CBS' forays into the world of single-camera comedies this fall, centers around the father-daughter duo of Simon Roberts (Williams) and Sydney (Gellar). Simon, the head of a powerful advertising agency, is unorthodox, unpredictable, larger-than-life ... basically, he's Robin Williams. Sydney is his exact opposite, often finding herself playing the parent in the relationship. The cast is rounded out by James Wolk ("Political Animals"), Hamish Linklater ("The New Adventures of Old Christine") and Amanda Setton ("The Mindy Project").
The behind-the-scenes look at the pilot find Williams up to his old hammy tricks, but they seems to be a comfortable fit with Kelley's typically quirky sensibilities. The look at a scene between Williams, Wolk and guest star Kelly Clarkson (playing an atypically ribald version of herself) proves the series has promise. Let's hope it can live up to it.
