Despite executive producer Kevin Williamson's reveal at Comic-Con that fans can expect to see less FBI-centric story lines when "The Following" returns in January, that doesn't mean the Fox serial killer thriller needs less agents. In fact, seeing as how presumed-dead Joe Carroll's portrayer, James Purefoy, will be back for Season 2, the need for FBI agents has only increased.

It's a good thing "The Following" just cast James McDaniel, then: the "NYPD Blue" alum has joined the cast in a recurring capacity for Season 2, TVGuide.com reports.

McDaniel will play an FBI agent named Ken Phillips. He'll run a task force in New York City, filling the hole left by Agent Debra Parker's death in last season's finale.

McDaniel is the latest in a long line of casting news for Season 2 of "The Following." Valerie Cruz will play an NYPD detective tasked with hunting down a new serial killer in NYC, Connie Nielsen will play a new love interest for Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon), and "Dexter" baddie Sam Underwood will take on another dark role.

"The Following" returns for Season 2 in January 2014.
