'The Giver' movie? Jeff Bridges may star in Lois Lowry adaptation

the-giver.jpgYou'd be hard pressed to find a book lover not familiar with Lois Lowry's 1993 young adult novel "The Giver," about a colorless dystopian society in which emotions have been removed and people exist in a state of content "sameness." Only one man, The Giver, holds the memories of the time before Sameness and, thus, an unparalleled range of emotion and knowledge.

In the novel, a twelve-year-old boy named Jonas is poised to become the "Receiver of Memory" -- the next Giver -- and the knowledge bestowed on him propels him to escape to save the life of a baby who is set to be executed.

Given the success of "The Hunger Games," another dystopian young adult novel turned into a film, it's no surprise that rumors of "The Giver's" film adaptation are beginning to swirl again. According to Manolith.com, actor Jeff Bridges and producer Nikki Silver are revisiting the idea of adapting the film, with Bridges poised to star as The Giver for a 2013 release.

"I originally thought of the role of the Giver as a vehicle for my father, the late Lloyd Bridges, however, at 61-years-old I feel the time is right for me to do it," Bridges told Filmofilia in June.
