'The Rite' wins weekend box office despite negative reviews

anthony-hopkins-the-rite.jpgAt 73, Anthony Hopkins can still open a movie. Despite critical panning, his exorcism horror move "The Rite" raked in $15 million at the box office on a slow, weather-impacted weekend. Though the studio had hoped for a slightly larger take, "The Rite" still won the box office, trumping the weekend's other major opening, "The Mechanic."

"The Mechanic," starring Jason Statham, did find critical acclaim and grossed higher on its debut weekend than analysts expected - taking in $11.5 million. Meanwhile, Oscar contenders "The King's Speech," "True Grit," and "Black Swan" experienced a bit of a boost this week from the Oscar buzz.
