'The Secret Circle' pilot loses a coven member

Sources confirm to Zap2it exclusively that the character Doug Henderson has been removed from the CW pilot.

In the original pilot script (penned by Andrew Miller), Doug is part of the seven-member coven of witches which the pilot focuses on. He's a football player who was bumped from up from third-string to starting quarterback thanks to the coven's powers. In January, "The Vampire Diaries'" showrunner and executive producer Kevin Williamson was brought in to rewrite Miller's script and soon the project was picked up to pilot. Fast forward to March and Doug is no longer in the pilot script.

So does this mean the character is gone from the project for good? Put down the spell books, "TSC" fans. We're told it's simply too early to tell as the pilot (which began filming this week in Vancouver) hasn't been picked up to go to series yet. It if is picked up, you could very well see Doug in the series.

Doug Henderson isn't the only coven member to be lost in the journey from page to screen. In the books series by L.J. Smith, the coven is comprised of 12 members: Cassie Blake, Adam Conant, Diana Meade, Nick Armstrong, Faye Chamberlain, Doug and Chris Henderson, Melanie Glaser, Laurel Quincey, Suzan Whittier, Sean Dulany and Deborah Armstrong.

Chris (Doug's twin brother), Melanie, Laurel, Suzan, Sean and Deborah were all trimmed. We expected this to happen as it would be pretty hard to introduce and fully develop 12 different characters -- in the coven alone.

The project centers on Californian teen Cassie ( Britt Robertson) who moves to her mother's hometown of New Salem, Maine, and soon discovers she's a witch. Turns out, she's also the key that will unlock a centuries-old battle of good versus evil. Typical teenage girl problems.

Joining Robertson in the coven are Thomas Dekker (Adam), Shelley Hennig (Diana), Louis Hunter (Nick), Phoebe Tonkin (Faye) and Jessica Parker Kennedy (new character Melissa).

Deadline recently reported that Sarah Fain and Elizabeth Craft has stepped down as executive producers on the project. Williamson and Miller will executive produce the pilot, with Williamson also serving as showrunner.
