'The X Factor': Carlito Olivero wants to be the Latin star pop music needs

"I feel there has been a void in the market for a Latin artist for a long time," he tells reporters after last week's semifinals results. "I remember back in the day turning on the radio and Latin artists were dominating the radio. That kind of faded away, and I'd like to bring back the true R&B and hip-hop and definitely want to put a new Latin face on music and at the same time tour around the world. I feel being here is an amazing opportunity. I'm so in love with life right now and blessed."

Olivero hasn't exactly been a shoo-in during Season 3 of the FOX reality competition -- he sang for his life in the Bottom 2 multiple times, and didn't always receive the best feedback from the judges. But somehow, he managed to up his game and peak at the exact time he needed to make it into the finals.

"Carlito is like our Rocky this season," host Mario Lopez says. "He was in the Bottom 2 a couple of times and I think what resonated with America was they really appreciate when someone wants it so bad and you can see them fighting. I think he really struck a chord and not to mention he had his best performances."

You could see his passion for performing when, after moving on to the next round, he was able to sing unencumbered by the constant pressure of seeking votes -- and completely owned the stage. "I almost lost my mind. I was just jumping around on stage I didn't want that moment to end," he says. "I still can't believe it but I am so grateful to all of the judges. They have just made sure to tell me that I can be better and better each week. I love you guys so much and I'm the happiest man in the world.

"It just felt so good to be on that stage -- the competition is not over of course but it just felt so good to be recognized for how much hard work has been put in to this. I couldn't be happier."
