'The X Factor' Season 4 renewed or canceled? Decision coming within the month
FOX entertainment chairman Kevin Reilly told reporters at the 2014 Television Critics Association winter press tour that he has not decided whether he'll renew the show for a fourth season. "There is no decision," Reilly says. "The show under-performed this year, Simon himself would admit that. The ratings were not what we hoped."
Reilly confirms what Cowell told Zap2it about changes in format, saying, "If the show were to come back, it would not be in the current format we have. ... We'll make that decision over the next month."
Regardless of how the show looks, Cowell will still be involved. "He's never going to be out of it," Reilly says. "It's his creation. ... I don't ever count out Simon Cowell on anything."
One thing that won't affect "X Factor" one way or another is the performance of the newly revamped "American Idol" Season 13. "I don't think it's between the two. I wish 'The Voice' would go away first," he jokes, but acknowledges the difficulty of launching another successful singing competition show. "As long as there are this many hours of these competitions, it does fragment the audience a little bit."
