'Thor: The Dark World' poster unmasks Christopher Eccleston's Malekith
"Doctor Who" alum Christopher Eccleston is taking over villain duties in the upcoming "Thor: The Dark World." His character, a dark elf known as Malekith the Accursed, might not have as tight a connection to Thor as Loki did in the first movie, but he is definitely a force to be reckoned with. A new poster released to promote the movie puts Malekith front and center as he reveals his true face.
When Zap2it caught up with Tom Hiddleston at D23 Expo earlier this summer, he talked about how the dark elf race fits into the world of Asgard -- and how his character Loki comes into play.
"What happens is the Dark Elves, led by Malekith, played by Chris Eccleston, come to Asgard and they present an extraordinary threat to the state of the universe, because they're a race of people who existed long before the universe came into being," he explained. "So before the big bang, the Dark Elves ruled the roost, and they want to return [the universe] to that state. And there's only one person who might know how to stop them, and that's public enemy No. 1, Loki. So Thor has to come down to prison, to the dungeons of Asgard where Loki's incarcerated, and ask for his help."
"Thor: The Dark World" is due in theaters on Nov. 8. It also stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Jaimie Alexander, Kat Dennings and Zachary Levi.
