Titanic II being built by Australian billionaire Clive Palmer

titanic-ii-australian-clive-palmer.jpgAustralian billionaire Clive Palmer has announced at a press conference that he intends to build a high-tech replica of the famed ocean liner Titanic in a Chinese shipyard and launch its maiden voyage from England to New York in 2016.

"It will be every bit as luxurious as the original Titanic, but ... will have state-of-the-art 21st-century technology and the latest navigation and safety systems," says Palmer in a statement. He adds that the project is a tribute to "the spirit of the men and women who worked on the original."

The Titanic II is the first of four new luxury ocean liners Palmer has commissioned CSC Jinling Shipyard to construct. While the replica Titanic will have four smoke stacks like the original, they will be purely decorative. The new ship will also include welding (the original had rivets) and a larger rudder and bow thrusters for better maneuverability. Titanic II will carry just under 1700 passengers.

This a little too tempting-fate-y to us, but to each his own. Also, we hope global warming doesn't get this Titanic II like it did on-screen.
