Tony Awards: 'Book of Mormon' musical heavily favored

book-of-mormon-2.jpgThe "Book of Mormon" musical, from the minds of "South Park" creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, is up for 14 Tony Awards during Sunday night's (June 12) ceremony, airing live from the Beacon Theatre in New York.

The musical is one shy of the record for nominations, held by "The Producers," and is heavily favored to take home many of the awards for which it is nominated. "Mormon" has already won Best Musical from the Drama League, the Outer Critics Circle and the New York Drama Critics' Circle.

In typical "South Park" fashion, "Mormon" goes high brow by paying homage to musicals like "The King and I" and "The Lion King," but it also goes a little low brow - the actual Book of Mormon ends up inside a character's anus at one point.

The big awards have most likely come down to a two-horse race between the humorous "Mormon" and the serious "Scottsboro Boys," a musical that tells the story of nine black teenagers in the 1930s who were wrongfully accused of rape.

The 65th annual Tony Awards air live on CBS Sunday night and are hosted once again by stage veteran and "How I Met Your Mother" star Neil Patrick Harris.
