A fair number of people who watched "American Idol" Wednesday kept their TVs tuned to FOX for the State of the Union address, giving the network an edge over coverage of the speech on ABC, CBS and NBC.

Ratings for all the big four networks were affected by the State of the Union, but thanks to "Idol" FOX ended the night in first place with 17.2 million viewers and a 9.6 rating/15 share in households. ABC (6.3 million, 3.9/6) finished second, followed by NBC (5.7 million, 3.7/6). CBS was not far behind with 5.4 million viewers and a 3.6/6. The CW (1.1 million, 0.8/1), which didn't air the speech, trailed.

FOX also led among adults 18-49 with a 6.4 rating. ABC took second with a 1.8, followed by NBC, 1.5; CBS, 1.4; and The CW, 0.5.
