TV ratings: 'Scandal' returns to series highs Thursday, 'The Originals' has so-so start for The CW

The Season 3 premiere of "Scandal" Thursday scored the show's best ratings ever in both total viewers and adults 18-49, growing by more than 50 percent in both measures over last season's debut.

The night's series premieres were a mixed bag. "The Millers" did a decent job holding onto its "Big Bang Theory" lead-in for CBS. "The Originals" also retained most of the audience from "The Vampire Diaries," but it fell well short of the "Beauty and the Beast" premiere in the timeslot last year (although "BATB" premiered against softer competition thanks to a vice presidential debate on the other networks). "TVD" was also down a good amount from last season's premiere but improved on last season's finale.

NBC's "Welcome to the Family" and "Sean Saves the World" both opened weakly, with "Welcome" scoring the smallest 18-49 rating ever for an NBC comedy premiere. In a minor bit of good news for the Peacock, "The Michael J. Fox Show" held fairly steady from its premiere last week, and "Parenthood" rose slightly in the 18-49 demographic.

CBS led the night with 11.7 million viewers and a 7.4 rating/12 share in households. ABC (8.55 million, 5.8/9) came in second, a good distance ahead of FOX (5.8 million, 3.5/6). NBC took fourth with 4.55 million viewers and a 2.9/5. The CW drew 2.35 million viewers and a 1.5/2.

CBS also won the adults 18-49 race with a 2.9 rating, edging ABC's 2.8. FOX took third with a 1.8, followed by NBC, 1.6, and The CW, 1.0.
