'Under the Dome' Season 2: Is Natalie Martinez being killed off?

At the 2014 TCA winter press tour presentation by CBS, a sizzle reel was shown for Season 2 of the popular summer drama, with executive producers teasing that two fan-favorite characters will be killed off in the premiere episode. "No one is safe in this town," says EP Neal Baer.

Deadline is reporting that actress Natalie Martinez, who plays Sheriff Esquivel on "Dome," has joined ABC drama "Secrets & Lies," which stars Ryan Phillippe as a man who finds the body of a young boy and becomes the prime suspect in his murder. Martinez is cast as Jess, the child's mother.

Does this mean that it's curtains for Esquivel?

Deadline mentions that "Secrets & Lies" has a series penalty, which means if the pilot doesn't get made and aired on TV, the network will owe a rather hefty sum to the producer/writer. Some series penalties even include a fine if the network doesn't order a show to series.

This means "Secrets & Lies" has a better chance than the average pilot to make it to air, and Martinez can't star on two shows, even if they both shoot in Wilmington, N.C.

Since the dome isn't disappearing any time soon, the only way to remove Esquivel is to kill her off, so right now, it doesn't look good for the town sheriff -- though perhaps she isn't killed in the premiere. Her death could certainly happen later in the season.

Either way, the sizzle reel for Season 2 showed her kissing Big Jim Rennie ( Dean Norris), so maybe it's better this way.

"Under the Dome" returns Monday, June 30 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on CBS.
