'Veronica Mars' movie: Will Lucas Grabeel return as Kelly Kuzzio?

lucas-grabeel-veronica-mars-movie-gi.jpgAs casting announcements for the upcoming and much-anticipated "Veronica Mars" movie have continually trickled in, it seems as if almost every minor character Kristen Bell's titular teen detective came across during her days at Neptune High would be returning for the film's central set piece, Veronica's ten year high school reunion. Except one -- Kelly Kuzzio, played by "Switched at Birth" star Lucas Grabeel.

Grabeel showed up twice in Season 2 of the cult favorite, once credited as the Wanna Score Boy in the episode "Ahoy, Mateys!" but it was his appearance in "Versatile Toppings" as Kelly that fans remember. In that episode (which also featured an appearance from "Laguna Beach" star Kristin Cavallari!), someone was blackmailing the gay students of Neptune High, threatening to out them if they didn't pay up. Kelly was a self-hating, closeted baseball player who sold his rims to pay the blackmail and pretended he'd been mugged.

Zap2It caught up with Grabeel recently while the actor was promoting the upcoming summer finale of "Switched at Birth," and we asked if there was a chance that Kelly might pop up at the big reunion in the film. "I would love to do that," he gushed.

If he's in, he's not saying, but he admits it was certainly on his radar. "It's funny because Deedee Bradley casts 'Switched at Birth' and she is the same person that cast me in 'Veronica Mars,'" Grabeel says. "So I did tell her -- she was on set one day ... she was actually on her phone, donating to Kickstarter for the project, and I was like, 'Hey, well, um, you know, Kelly Kuzzio. I'd love to come back.' She was like, 'Oh my god, I totally forgot.'"

Principal filming on the "VM" movie wrapped in July and, though Bell herself told us the footage looks "radical," there's still no official word on whether Grabeel was involved. But if he's not, there's always an opportunity for reshoots, right? Your move, Rob Thomas.
