Vin Diesel is 'Kojak' in big-screen remake of '70s cop show

Universal -- which produced the TV series that ran from 1973-78 -- has hired "Skyfall" writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade to write a script for the film, Deadline reports. They're expected to "re-imagine and contemporize" the character, which tends to mean "throw out most everything but the name." In this case, presumably, Diesel will also share a shaved head with the original character.

Diesel (the "Fast and Furious" franchise) is also producing the remake along with his partner Samantha Vincent.

If the movie makes it to theaters, Diesel will be the second 21st-century Kojak. Ving Rhames played the character in a 2005 USA series that ran for one season.
