'Walking Dead' Season 4: Cast expands with three new regulars, one recurring

walking-dead-chad-coleman-sonequa-martin-green-season-4-amc.jpg"The Walking Dead" continues to beef up its ensemble for Season 4, promoting recurring actors Chad L. Coleman (Tyreese), Sonequa Martin-Green (Sasha) and Emily Kinney (Beth) to full-time regulars and adding Melissa Ponzio (Woodbury massacre survivor Karen) to its roster of recurring players.

The moves signal a commitment to some of the comic book's core characters -- especially Tyreese -- and help to fill gaps created by the Season 3 loss of full-time cast members Sarah Wayne Callies (Lori), Michael Rooker (Merle) and Laurie Holden (Andrea), plus recurring players IronE Singleton (T-Dog), Lew Temple (Axel) and Dallas Roberts (Milton).

AMC's smash hit already confirmed the return of David Morrissey (The Governor) in Season 4.

Whether or not the promotions for Coleman, Martin-Green and Kinney means their characters are less likely to wind up walker-bait in Season 4 is hard to say. Nothing seems guaranteed on "The Walking Dead," even for the actors appearing in the opening credits.

Word also leaked this week that the show is casting for a brand new recurring character.

[Correction: An earlier version of this story implied that "The Walking Dead" co-stars Melissa McBride (Carol) and Scott Wilson (Hershel) are not contracted as series regulars.]
