"Despicable Me 2" proved that it's the summer hit to beat by bringing in the highest box office totals in its second weekend of release. The animated comedy beat out two high-profile, new releases -- "Grown Ups 2" and "Pacific Rim" -- to take the top spot.

In total, "Despicable Me" added $44.8 million to its ticket sales, reaching a total gross of $229.2 million during a week and a half of release time. Although this amount did represent a sales drop of almost 50 percent from the movie's opening weekend (which set records), the amount was high enough to easily take first place.

"Grown Ups 2" started out the weekend at the top, but the poorly reviewed Adam Sandler comedy couldn't keep up with "Despicable Me 2" after Friday. The film's opening-weekend gross was $42.5 million. "Pacific Rim," a highly anticipated action thriller from Guillermo del Toro managed to reach only third place for the weekend with $38.3 million in ticket sales.

Weekend totals dropped off sharply below the top 3. "The Heat" was in fourth place, adding $14 million to reach $112.4 million overall. This was followed by the under-performing "The Lone Ranger," whose $11.1 million weekend only got the would-be blockbuster to $71.1 million overall.

"Monsters University," "World War Z," "White House Down," "Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain" and "Man of Steel" rounded out the top 10 for the weekend.

Over in the independent movies, "The Way, Way Back" continued to dominate, bringing in $1.1 million to reach a total of $1.9 million thus far in its release. New indie drama, "Fruitvale Station" earned $377,285 playing in only 7 theaters -- this averages out to an incredible $53,898 per theater income.
