WGN America orders first original scripted series, Brannon Braga's 'Salem'
The network, under the leadership of new president and general manager Matt Cherniss, has given a straight-to-series order to the drama "Salem," from "Star Trek" and "24" writer Brannon Braga and Adam Simon ("The Haunting in Connecticut"). The 13-episode season is slated to begin production in the fall for a 2014 premiere.
"Salem" was originally developed for FX and is set in the volatile world of 17th Century Massachusetts, exploring what really fueled the town's infamous witch trials, daring to uncover the dark, supernatural truth hiding behind the veil of this shocking period in American history.
The show will center on an epic romance wrapped around the revelation that witches are real, but not who or what they seem.
In a statement, Cherniss said, "Brannon and Adam have an amazing vision for the world and characters that comprise Salem, Massachusetts, during the witch trials, and we believe that a great adventure full of supernatural, romance, and action awaits the viewer."
"Salem" is expected to kick-start WGN America's aggressive expansion of its programming slate.
