'The Riches' Goes Under

The con is off for FX and "The Riches."

After a few months in limbo, the cable series about a family of grifters has been cancelled, according to multiple news reports. The show ran for 20 episodes, including a seven-episode second season that was abbreviated because of the writers strike.

The usual culprit -- falling ratings -- is what doomed "The Riches," which starred Minnie Driver and Eddie Izzard. The show premiered to an audience of 3.8 million people in March 2007, and while ratings slipped some over the course of the first season stayed healthy enough to earn a renewal.

Season two, however, fell by more than 40 percent in the key adults 18-49 demographic. Both "The Riches" and fellow second-year show "Dirt" debuted their strike-shortened seasons in March, and neither gained much traction with viewers ("Dirt" was also cancelled).

Driver's performance as Dahlia Molloy earned her a Emmy nomination in 2007 and a Golden Globe nod this year.
